This is a magnificent quality solid silver presentation jewellery casket or possibly an extra large table snuff box given by Queen Victoria with her Imperial State Crown and personal Cypher VRI engraved on the lid for Victoria Regina Imperatrix - (Queen Victoria Empress of India). The hinged casket is decorated with gadrooned borders with a central quatrefoil and leaf design. The domed lid has a central round raised and ribbed cartouche where the Queens cypher and crown is engraved.
It sits on melon shaped bun feet. A very smart solid silver box from the late Victorian period. It was made in London in 1896 which was the year Queen Victoria became Englands longest reigning monarch.
Made by the top London silversmiths J B Carrington & Co with their retail mark stamped on the base. Dimensions are 16.2 cm x 10cm x 6.5cm high and it is made from an excellent gauge of silver weighing just under 1/2 kg at 476g. Condition is very good with a lovely patina and no repairs, only wear commensurate for the age with a few tiny dings to the back.The interior is lemon gilded.
