In a gorgeous powder blue enamel with a white lid. It dates from circa 1780 and has the original mirror. The powder blue enamel is in nice condition on the outside of the box with only one tiny chip to the interior white enamel on the top left rim. There are two hairline cracks on the lid, one on the left hand side and another very hard to see without magnification on the right side.
There is no restoration to the box. It is nearly impossible to find an original Bilston enamel box without any damage or restoration, not surprising as they are so small and delicate, once dropped they are easily damaged. The poem on the lid reads If you my Love Accept of This Reward the Giver With a Kiss In the central cartouche is a Georgian couple sitting in the countryside kissing.
This pretty little Georgian survivor would have been used for small patches to cover your smallpox scars if you were unlucky enough to have them. Size is 40mm x 32mm and 23mm high.
