A very smart solid silver box from the late Victorian period. It was made in London in 1896 which was the year Queen Victoria became Englands longest reigning monarch.
Made by the top London silversmiths J B Carrington & Co with their retail mark stamped on the base. Dimensions are 16.2 cm x 10cm x 6.5cm high and it is made from an excellent gauge of silver weighing just under 1/2 kg at 476g.
Condition is very good with a lovely patina and no repairs, only wear commensurate for the age with a few tiny dings to the back. The interior is lemon gilded. Please study the photos which form part of the description.
John Bodman Carrington was a British silversmith and jeweller. In 1870s he worked in the London branch of the Birmingham firm G.The company specialised in high quality silver items, they also produced fine jewellery such as brooches, cufflinks and lockets, that were very much sought after by royals all over Europe. The company obtained Royal Warrants from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Edward VII, George V and the Russian Tsars. Among the firms who retailed Carrington & Co.
